We are working hard to produce a quality Morocco Sahara camp that even budget travellers to the Sahara can afford – and we are delighted to announce a new budget Sahara tent option at Sahara Safari Camp.

For the first time travellers can sleep in the Morocco Sahara in a real bed under a cosy duvet (and under the stars!) from just £24 pp per night – including dinner !!! The only small inconvenience is a 5 metre walk to a loo and shower which is just behind the sleeping tent.

We can even arrange for you to take a local bus from Marrakech to Tagounite and pick you up from town!

Contact us now for availability

The Sahara is one of the most beautiful wilderness areas on earth. Parts of the Moroccan Sahara suffer from mass-tourism and are over-run with quad bikes, large camps with tents in a line and shared loos – not really the experience either myself or typical guests enjoy.

Together with Mustapha, my Moroccan friend (who was the first Moroccan to lead small group adventure holidays in the 90′s) we reccied and found simply the best location for a camp we could imagine – the Sahara at its very best. Dunes, date-palms, camels, flat-topped mountains not far away, authentic tribal villages and relatively easy access.

After negotiations with tribal elders and after taking inspiration from the design of East African safari tents, the Sahara Safari Camp was pitched.

Our camp is unique in many ways, but we are particularly focused on operating the camp with 10 ‘eco-credentials’ in mind:

- Strict control of water usage, but enough for guests to wash in hot water each day.
- Use of recycled tyres to make buckets and water jugs for showering.
- Use of ‘bio-toi’ loos with bio-degradable bags – avoids harmful chemical loos.
- Use of fresh sustainable produce bought and grown locally in Draa Valley.
- Majority of staff employed from local area. Training and development key.
- Use of camels/mules to supply water and produce – provides income locally.
- No permanent structures to minimise environmental damage.
- Solar and dynamo-powered torches.
- Use of Solar Gorillas.
- Develop and support village projects such as health or education facilities.

You are welcome to our camp – we guarantee you’ll have a wonderful experience!

The Sahara is the world’s second largest desert after Antarctica. At over 9,000,000 square kilometres (3,500,000 square miles), it covers much of northern Africa; an area stretching from the Red Sea, including parts of the Mediterranean coasts, to the outskirts of the Atlantic Ocean. It is almost as large as the continental United States, and is larger than Australia. The Sahara has an intermittent history that may go back as much as 3 million years.

The Sahara covers huge parts of Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Western Sahara, Sudan and Tunisia.

The boundaries of the Sahara are the Atlantic Ocean on the west, the Atlas Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea on the north, the Red Sea and Egypt on the east, and the Sudan and the valley of the Niger River on the south. The Sahara is divided into western Sahara, the central Ahaggar Mountains, the Tibesti Mountains, the Aïr Mountains (a region of desert mountains and high plateaus), Tenere desert and the Libyan desert (the most arid region). The highest peak in the Sahara is Emi Koussi (3415 m) in the Tibesti Mountains in northern Chad.

The Sahara divides the continent of Africa into North and Sub-Saharan Africa. The southern border of the Sahara is marked by a band of semi-arid savanna called the Sahel; south of the Sahel lies the lusher Sudan and the Congo River Basin. Most of the Sahara consists of rocky hamada; ergs (large sand dunes) form only a minor part.

Isolation and wilderness, vast-open spaces, palm-lined oases, desert wildlife, surreal scenery, nomadic people, camels and often remarkable volcanic vistas are just some of the attractions that the Sahara holds for the traveller who takes time to journey there.

4WD desert exploration, camel trekking safaris, desert walks and trekking, quad biking and dune boarding are activities enjoyed in Morocco’s Sahara desert.

Travel in the Sahara can be a dangerous pursuit for those poorly equipped and ill-prepared. Suitably equipped 4WD vehicles, and an eye for navigation, are essential for navigating sand tracks.

Backpackers and budget travellers have used a network of simple camp sites for many years in Morocco, but the development of luxury camping accommodation has been slow to take off.

In the past 3 years ‘Glamping’ has really taken off as a preferred accommodation to holidaymakers wanting to get closer to nature and the great outdoors but without compromising on comfort, private facilities and a good bed to sleep in.

Luxury camping has been possible in sub-Saharan Africa since the days of the early explorers – and now the concept of glamping in Morocco has arrived in the Moroccan Sahara at the Sahara Safari Camp.
